Compliance Standards

AVIXA, BICSI, TIA & ADA Compliance Guide

The four standards that govern professional AV design — and how TotalSyncAV automates compliance across all of them in a single pass.

AVIXA DISCAS — Display Image Sizing

AVIXA's DISCAS standard (ANSI/AVIXA 10101:2018) defines the minimum display size for a given viewing distance and content type. It is the foundational standard for every conference room, classroom, and control room.

The standard defines four viewing categories:

  • BDM (Basic Decision Making): General slides, video — diagonal ≥ distance ÷ 4
  • BDM-MC (Multi-Content): Mixed content with side-by-side — diagonal ≥ distance ÷ 4 per pane
  • CCM (Critical Confident Monitoring): Detailed text, spreadsheets — diagonal ≥ distance ÷ 3
  • CCM-MC: Critical multi-content — diagonal ≥ distance ÷ 3 per pane

TotalSyncAV calculates DISCAS automatically from room dimensions and flags non-compliant display sizes in the compliance score. The configurator recommends the minimum compliant display and suggests certified commercial models.

BICSI — Cabling & Pathway Standards

BICSI (Building Industry Consulting Service International) governs the installation, pathway, and cabling standards for telecommunications and AV infrastructure. Key requirements for AV spaces:

  • Cable pathways sized to 40% fill maximum (NEC 800.3)
  • Separation of AV and electrical pathways (minimum 12" parallel, 90° crossings)
  • Category cable terminations to TIA-568 color coding (Orange/Orange-White pair on pins 1–2)
  • Firestopping at all penetrations of rated walls (UL 1479 assemblies)
  • Labeling per TIA-606-B at both ends of every cable

TotalSyncAV's Division 27 standards module generates cable schedules and pathway requirements per room, with BICSI-compliant labeling and fill calculations.

TIA — Telecommunications Infrastructure

TIA (Telecommunications Industry Association) standards define the physical infrastructure that supports AV systems. The most relevant for AV design:

  • TIA-568.3: Category cable performance (Cat 6A minimum for AV-over-IP)
  • TIA-569: Pathway and space requirements (conduit, raceway, sleeve sizing)
  • TIA-606-B: Administration and labeling of telecommunications infrastructure
  • TIA-942: Data center infrastructure (applies to AV rack rooms and MDF/IDF)

For AV-over-IP systems (Dante, NDI, SDVoE), TIA-568.3 Category 6A is the minimum. TotalSyncAV flags network requirements per room and generates cable schedules compliant with TIA standards.

ADA Compliance for AV Systems

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the ANSI A117.1 standard define accessibility requirements for AV installations. Key AV-specific requirements:

  • Display bottom edge ≥ 42" above finished floor (AFF) for seated viewing
  • Display centerline between 48"–60" AFF for standing viewer access
  • Controls and touch panels mounted between 15"–48" AFF (forward reach)
  • Clear floor space of 30"×48" minimum at all interactive elements
  • Hearing loop or assistive listening system for rooms ≥ 50 occupants (ANSI S5.18)

TotalSyncAV checks ADA mounting heights, clearances, and assistive listening requirements automatically — every compliance score includes an ADA compliance line item.

How TotalSyncAV Automates All Four Standards

Instead of manually cross-referencing AVIXA, BICSI, TIA, and ADA documents for every room, TotalSyncAV runs a single automated compliance pass:

  • AVIXA DISCAS: Display sizing calculated from furthest viewer distance
  • BICSI: Cable pathways, fill ratios, and separation requirements generated per room
  • TIA: Category cable, pathway, and labeling requirements specified
  • ADA: Mounting heights, clearances, and assistive listening checked

The AI Design Audit goes further — upload a room photo and the engine returns a single compliance score (0–100) that aggregates all four standards, with specific gaps and remediation steps for each.

Master AV Compliance Checklist

  • Display sized to AVIXA DISCAS (BDM or CCM for content type)
  • Cable pathways sized to 40% fill max with AV/electrical separation
  • Category 6A minimum for AV-over-IP (Dante, NDI, SDVoE)
  • All cables labeled per TIA-606-B at both ends
  • Firestopping at all rated wall penetrations
  • Display bottom edge ≥ 42" AFF (ADA)
  • Touch panel controls mounted 15"–48" AFF (ADA forward reach)
  • Assistive listening system for rooms ≥ 50 occupants
  • RT60 reverberation ≤ 0.6s in 500–2000Hz speech band
  • Network: dedicated VLAN with QoS for real-time media

Compliance Scoring Example

54

Score

Typical pre-audit conference room

• Display 65" in 24ft room — DISCAS BDM requires 72"+

• Cat 6 (not 6A) — insufficient for Dante AV-over-IP

• Display bottom at 36" AFF — below ADA 42" minimum

• No assistive listening system — required for 50+ occupancy
