Microsoft Teams Rooms Standards & Compliance

The complete guide to designing, validating, and certifying Microsoft Teams Rooms — and how TotalSyncAV automates every requirement.

What Is Microsoft Teams Rooms (MTR)?

Microsoft Teams Rooms is Microsoft's certified meeting room solution that extends the Teams collaboration experience into physical conference spaces. An MTR system combines a certified compute unit, display, camera, microphone, and speaker — all managed through Teams Admin Center with remote management, health monitoring, and automatic updates.

MTR certification is categorized by room size, and each category has strict hardware requirements. Designing outside these categories voids certification and removes access to Teams-native features like IntelliFrame, People Recognition, and proximity join.

MTR Room Categories & Sizing

Microsoft defines four primary room categories. Each dictates display sizing, camera type, microphone coverage, and seating capacity.

CategoryCapacityDisplayCameraAudio
Focus Room2–3 people1× 43–55"Wide-angle USBSpeakerphone bar
Small Room4–6 people1× 55–65"Intelligent USBCeiling mic array
Medium Room7–12 people1–2× 65–85"Intelligent PTZCeiling beamforming
Large Room13–20+ people2× 85"+Multi-cameraDistributed ceiling mics

Display Sizing — AVIXA DISCAS for Teams

Microsoft requires Teams Rooms displays to meet AVIXA DISCAS (Display Image Size for a 2D Content in an Audiovisual System) standards. The key calculation is the furthest viewer distance relative to the display diagonal:

Basic Decision Making (BDM): Display diagonal ≥ furthest viewer distance ÷ 4. For a 20 ft room, this means at least an 85" display.

Basic Decision Making — Multi-Content (BDM-MC): For dual-display rooms, each display must independently meet BDM for its content type.

TotalSyncAV's room configurator calculates DISCAS automatically from room dimensions — you enter length, width, and ceiling height, and the engine returns the minimum compliant display size and recommended model.

Camera & IntelliFrame Requirements

Teams Rooms cameras must provide intelligent framing — auto-framing, people counting, or IntelliFrame (Microsoft's AI-driven multi-camera composition). Fixed USB cameras are only certified for Focus rooms. Medium and large rooms require intelligent PTZ or multi-camera systems with:

  • Auto-framing with person detection
  • Minimum 1080p at 30fps
  • Teams-certified firmware (Logitech Rally, Poly Studio, AVer CAM520)
  • IntelliFrame support for rooms with dual cameras

Audio — Beamforming Microphone Coverage

Teams Rooms audio must provide full-table coverage with echo cancellation and noise suppression. Microsoft requires:

  • Ceiling-mounted beamforming microphone arrays for medium and large rooms
  • Full-duplex audio with AEC (acoustic echo cancellation)
  • SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) ≥ 65dB
  • Coverage radius appropriate to room dimensions (Shure MXA920: 20ft, MXA910: 30ft)

How TotalSyncAV Automates MTR Compliance

Every MTR requirement above is automated by TotalSyncAV's engine. When you select "Microsoft Teams" as your platform in the room configurator:

  • Room category is auto-detected from dimensions and seating capacity
  • DISCAS display sizing is calculated and validated against the furthest viewer
  • Camera, microphone, and speaker recommendations are filtered to Teams-certified models only
  • ADA mounting heights and clearances are checked automatically
  • A compliance score (0–100) is generated, with specific gaps flagged for remediation

The AI Design Audit goes further — upload a photo of an existing room and the engine returns a compliance score, gap analysis, and upgrade BOM with Teams-certified commercial hardware.

Microsoft Teams Rooms Requirements Checklist

  • Teams-certified compute unit (Logitech, Poly, Yealink, or Crestron Flex)
  • Display sized to AVIXA DISCAS for furthest viewer
  • Intelligent camera with auto-framing (medium/large rooms)
  • Ceiling beamforming microphone array with full-table coverage
  • Teams Admin Center enrollment and remote management enabled
  • Network: dedicated VLAN, QoS tagged for Teams media
  • ADA-compliant display mounting (bottom edge ≥ 42" AFF)
  • Acoustic treatment for RT60 ≤ 0.6s in speech range

Compliance Scoring Example

72

Score

Typical pre-audit MTR room

• Display 65" in a 22ft room — DISCAS requires 85"+

• USB speakerphone bar — insufficient for 12-person table

• No IntelliFrame dual-camera support

• Display bottom edge at 38" AFF — below ADA minimum

Put This Standard to Work

TotalSyncAV automates every requirement above — from room sizing to compliance scoring — in minutes, not days.
