Zoom Rooms
Zoom Rooms Standards & Compliance
Design and validate Zoom Rooms to certification standards — from display sizing to audio coverage — automated by TotalSyncAV.
What Is Zoom Rooms?
Zoom Rooms is Zoom's software-based meeting room solution that turns any conference space into a Zoom-native collaboration environment. Unlike hardware-locked systems, Zoom Rooms runs on certified appliances or bring-your-own-device (BYOD) setups, with a dedicated controller managing the room's display, camera, audio, and scheduling display.
Zoom certifies hardware through its Zoom Rooms Certified program, which validates compatibility with Zoom's video, audio, and content-sharing pipeline. Designing outside certified hardware removes access to Zoom Rooms features like Smart Gallery, multi-stream, and Zoom Whiteboard.
Zoom Room Categories & Sizing
Zoom defines room categories based on capacity and use case. Each category has display, camera, and audio requirements.
| Category | Capacity | Display | Camera | Audio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huddle | 1–4 people | 1× 40–55" | Wide-angle | Integrated speakerphone |
| Small | 4–6 people | 1× 55–65" | Auto-framing USB | Ceiling mic or soundbar |
| Medium | 6–10 people | 1–2× 65–75" | PTZ with tracking | Ceiling beamforming |
| Large | 10–18+ people | 2× 75"+ | Multi-camera PTZ | Distributed ceiling mics + DSP |
Display Sizing for Zoom Rooms
Zoom Rooms follow AVIXA DISCAS for display sizing — the same standard used for all professional AV. The critical calculation:
BDM (Basic Decision Making): For shared content (slides, documents), display diagonal ≥ furthest viewer distance ÷ 4.
CCM (Critical Confident Monitoring): For detailed content (spreadsheets, CAD), display diagonal ≥ furthest viewer distance ÷ 3.
For a typical 18 ft medium room, BDM requires a minimum 75" display. TotalSyncAV calculates this automatically and flags non-compliant rooms in the compliance score.
Camera & Smart Gallery Requirements
Zoom Rooms cameras must support Zoom's Smart Gallery feature for medium and large rooms — this splits a single room into multiple participant video feeds using AI framing. Requirements:
- Auto-framing with person detection (AVer CAM520, Logitech Rally, Poly Studio)
- Smart Gallery support for multi-feed rendering
- Minimum 1080p / 30fps with 15fps minimum for low-bandwidth
- Multi-camera setups for rooms over 18 ft
Audio Coverage & DSP
Zoom Rooms audio requires full-room coverage with echo cancellation. Zoom's audio pipeline handles AEC and noise suppression in software, but the physical microphone must cover the entire seating area:
- Huddle/small: integrated speakerphone or soundbar (Shure Stem, Yamaha YVC)
- Medium: ceiling beamforming array (Shure MXA920, Biamp Impera)
- Large: distributed ceiling mics with external DSP (QSC, Biamp Tesira)
- Reverberation time (RT60) ≤ 0.6s in the 500–2000Hz speech band
How TotalSyncAV Automates Zoom Rooms Compliance
Select "Zoom" as your platform and TotalSyncAV handles the rest:
- Room category auto-detected from dimensions
- DISCAS display sizing validated for both BDM and CCM content types
- Camera and microphone recommendations filtered to Zoom-certified models
- Smart Gallery multi-camera requirements checked for medium/large rooms
- RT60 acoustic compliance flagged with treatment recommendations
- ADA mounting and clearance checks included in every compliance score
Zoom Rooms Requirements Checklist
- Zoom Rooms Certified appliance or BYOD compute (Windows/Mac/iOS)
- Display sized to AVIXA DISCAS (BDM or CCM based on content type)
- Auto-framing camera with Smart Gallery support (medium/large)
- Ceiling beamforming mic or integrated speakerphone (by room size)
- Dedicated iPad or touch controller for room scheduling
- Network: wired connection, QoS for Zoom media traffic
- ADA-compliant display mounting and pathway clearances
- Acoustic treatment for RT60 ≤ 0.6s in speech range
Compliance Scoring Example
Score
Typical pre-audit Zoom Room
• 75" display in a 22ft room — CCM requires 85"+
• Single USB camera — no Smart Gallery support
• Tabletop speakerphone — insufficient for 10-person room
• No acoustic treatment — RT60 estimated at 0.9s
